Horse Riding for Beginners in Chiang Mai

Nervous about your first ride? You are not alone. Thousands of first-time riders discover the magic of horseback riding every year at Pong Horse Park — and almost all of them leave wondering why they waited so long. Whether you are a tourist visiting Chiang Mai, a local looking for something new, or a parent hoping to introduce your children to horses, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know before you arrive.

What to Expect on Your First Ride

When you arrive at Pong Horse Park, the first thing you will notice is how unhurried everything feels. There is no pressure, no rush, and no expectation that you already know what you are doing. Your guide will greet you, walk you to the stables, and introduce you to your horse before anything else happens.

The pre-ride briefing takes about ten minutes. Your guide will cover the basics: how to hold the reins, how to ask the horse to walk and stop, and what to do if you feel uncertain at any point. This is your chance to ask questions — ask as many as you like. Then comes mounting. Your guide will stand beside you the entire time, holding the horse steady and coaching you through each step.

Once in the saddle, you will begin with a gentle walking warm-up in the paddock, getting a feel for the horse's movement before the trail begins. The trail itself winds through open rice fields and bamboo groves on the edge of Hang Dong — flat, wide, and perfectly suited to first-time riders. Our guides ride alongside you throughout. There are no dramatic hills, no galloping, and no moment where you are left to manage alone.

By the time you return to the stables, most first-time riders wear the same expression: relief mixed with a grin they cannot quite control. The whole experience, from arrival to departure, typically takes around two hours for a one-hour package.

Age and Physical Requirements

Horse riding at Pong Horse Park is open to almost everyone. Children as young as three years old are welcome on our family rides, provided they are confident enough to sit still and follow simple instructions. We have smaller horses specifically suited to young riders, and parents can ride alongside on a separate horse for the duration.

For adults, there is no upper age limit. We have had riders in their seventies and eighties who have had wonderful experiences. Flexibility helps but is not required. If you have mobility concerns, knee problems, or a stiff back, let your guide know before the ride. We can adapt the mounting process and choose a horse with a particularly smooth, gentle walk.

The weight limit for most of our horses is approximately 90 kilograms. This varies depending on the individual animal, so if you have concerns, contact us in advance and we will match you with the right horse from our herd. We have horses of genuinely different sizes and temperaments, and finding a good match matters to us as much as it does to you.

What to Wear and Bring

What you wear matters more than most first-timers expect. The two non-negotiables are closed-toe shoes and long trousers. Bare skin against a saddle is uncomfortable at best; on longer rides it can cause painful friction. Flip-flops and sandals are not permitted — feet need to grip the stirrups securely, and open footwear creates a genuine safety risk.

For your top half, breathable fabric is your best friend in Chiang Mai's climate. A light cotton or moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt gives sun protection without overheating. Avoid loose, flowing clothing — it can catch on branches, become tangled in equipment, or startle your horse with unexpected movement.

Beyond clothing, bring sunscreen, a water bottle, and insect repellent. A hat is useful if you choose not to wear a helmet, though we recommend the helmet for shade as well as head protection. Leave heavy jewellery, scarves, and large backpacks at the car — they are uncomfortable on horseback and create unnecessary hazards.

Safety First

Every ride at Pong Horse Park begins with a safety briefing. This is not a formality — it covers the signals you will use with your horse, how to respond if the animal becomes unsettled, and what to do if you feel unsafe at any point. Our guides are trained in safety protocols and hold first aid certification.

Helmets are provided complimentarily for all riders. They are fitted before you mount, and your guide checks that yours sits correctly before the ride departs. We carry a full range of sizes. If you would like your own helmet for the ride, you can add a rental through our booking add-ons.

Our horses are carefully selected for guided rides with the public. They are patient, calm animals accustomed to nervous and inexperienced riders. That said, horses are living animals — they can react to unexpected stimuli. Our guides are experienced in reading early signs of agitation and will step in well before anything escalates. Falls are rare, but our guides are trained to respond to them calmly and quickly.

Building Your Confidence

The most useful thing you can do on horseback is breathe. Slow, deep breathing calms your own nervous system and — because horses are extraordinarily sensitive to rider emotion — it calms your horse as well. When you tense up, the horse feels it. When you relax, the horse relaxes too. This connection is one of the most remarkable things about riding.

The 4-7-8 technique works particularly well: inhale slowly for four counts, hold for seven, exhale for eight. Practice it before you mount, and return to it whenever you feel anxious during the ride. Within a few cycles, most riders notice their shoulders dropping and their grip on the reins softening.

Your guide will not push you to move faster or attempt more than you are ready for. If walking for the entire ride is what feels right, that is exactly what you will do. If you want to try a gentle trot near the end, your guide will introduce it when the moment feels comfortable. The pace is always yours to set.

"I was terrified when I arrived — genuinely shaking. But my guide introduced me to the horse before we even talked about riding, and something about that changed everything. By the end I did not want to get off. This was the highlight of my entire Thailand trip." — Maria, Switzerland
